The Steinbeck group was established in 1997 at the Max-Planck-Institute of Chemical Ecology (MPI-CE) in Jena and subsequently relocated via the Cologne University Bioinformatics Centre (CUBIC) and the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) to the University of Jena, where it is currently located.
